5 Reasons to Shave With a Double Edge Safety Razor

by Jessica Amey

Double edge safety razors are less commonly used to shave, particularly by women, largely due to the fact that they aren’t as readily available or promoted to us as the disposable or cartridge razors we see on the shelves. DE razors, usually made from stainless steel, are more of a traditional shaving method that goes back centuries and has been used by men and women to achieve a close shave with minimal fuss.

Here are just some of the main reasons why both men and women should consider using a double
edge safety razor.

  1. Cheaper
Double edge safety razors are designed to last. With the proper care and storage, they can last users many years – that’s years of not having to spend money on a new razor or cartridges. Instead of having to buy disposable razors from the shops and being a victim to the formidable ‘pink tax’ on women’s toiletries, you can invest in a high-quality stainless steel safety razor saving yourself tons of money in the long term.

Another way that disposable or cartridge razor brands are able to charge more for their products is with the addition of unnecessary additions like moisturising strips and extra blades which aren’t needed and can actually do more harm than good for your skin. When using a DE safety razor, all you need to replace is the blades after a few uses, which are incredibly cheap to replace and can be safely recycled. It’s far more economical and cost-effective to invest in a quality double edge safety razor from a reputable brand like The English Shaving Company, which stock a range of razors to suit both men and women.
  1. Better for your skin
Another reason why you may want to consider shaving with a DE safety razor is that it’s far better for your skin. Multi-blade razors tug on your hair to pull it taut, which enable the blades to then slice through the hair below the skin’s surface. DE razors, on the other hand, have one sharp blade which is able to slice through your hair right next to the skin to achieve a close shave without any irritation or pulling on your skin, eliminating the risk of pesky ingrown hairs or razor bumps.

On top of this, double edge safety razors only require small amounts of pressure to be applied to the skin to achieve a close shave. Multi-blade razors will need heavier pressure which again can lead to further friction and skin irritation post-shave.
  2. Better for the environment
Due to DE safety razors only needing the blade swapping after every few uses, they are a far more environmentally-friendly and sustainable way to shave than their disposable counterparts. Instead of throwing away an entire razor after a few uses and it ending up in a landfill, you can simply swap the small metal blade for a fresh and sharp one.

Once you have removed your blades, you can store the old blades in a secure and safe metal tin. When your container is full, old blades can be taken to a recycling or waste centre to be fully recycled, hugely reducing the environmental impact of your day-to-day shaving routine!
  3. Closer shave
Due to the sharpness of a double edged razor blade, when shaving it can cut through the hair right next to the skin to achieve an incredibly close shave without leaving any irritation in it’s wake like a multi-blade razor can. Unlike a cartridge razor or disposable razor where you may need to go over the same area of skin multiple times to get rid of all the hairs, a DE safety razor cuts through the hair on the first swipe, saving you time and alleviating how much stress is put on your skin.
  4. Ease
The switch to using a double edge safety razor will, of course, mean that your shaving technique will need to be adapted slightly. Once you’ve got the hang of it though, they are far easier and more efficient to use. Due to the sharpness of the single blade, you only need to apply a tiny amount of pressure to glide the razor over the skin and slice through your hairs.
