How To Make Your Living Room Much More Modern

by Jessica Amey

If you have a very small home or if you want to make sure that your home is super stylish then the first thing that you can do is take advantage of the space that you do have. You also need to make sure that you have a plan before you start, so take a look below to get some ideas.

Draw a Plan
You need to know what space you have before you plan out what you are going to do with it. It’s a good idea for you to sketch out every single room so that you can know what shape and size you are dealing with. When you do this, you can then make sure that you buy items that are going to fit well in the space. One problem that a lot of people deal with is that they go out and they buy things that they “think” will fit, but when they get them home, they quickly find that the furniture is way too big for the suggested space. If you want to get around this then make sure that you take measurements and then measure the item you plan on buying as well. When you do this, you can then find out how it is going to fit and you can also visualise it in your space as well. This is a great way to save money and it is also a good way for you to know whether or not something is going to work well for your design.

Earth Tones

If you opt for earth tones then you’ll find that this can give you a contemporary look and it can also help the room to appear much bigger as well. When you do this, you can also take advantage of earth-toned decorations and this will bring the whole room together. Think about using artwork or even opt for themed decorations as well. This is a great way for you to get that modern look and it is also a great way for you to take things to that next level in terms of your home design.

Mirrors

One thing that you may have noticed is that a lot of modern homes have mirrors. Mirrors can make a room look much bigger and it also gives you the chance to open up the space as well. When you have a mirror opposite to the artwork on your walls, you can bounce the design across the room and this will make it look as though there are more things on your walls than there actually are. When choosing your mirrors, it is always a good idea for you to choose ones that are oversized. This will help to add brightness to the room and if you have a wooden frame you can easily match this in with the photo frames you have as well.

Accents

If you want to add a bit of colour to the room then consider having a feature wall. When you have a feature wall, you can then build around it with colours that match in. Of course, if you want something that is going to divert eyes as soon as people enter the room then consider having bright and vivid shades. If people are going to be looking at the yellow or red wall, they are not going to be looking at how small the room is when compared and this is a great way for you to really take advantage of little design tricks.

Sofa

Your sofa is quite possibly the main focal point of the room, so if you want to try and make the most out of the space that you have then it helps to make sure that you have one suited to your chosen design. For example, if you are going for earth tones then you’ll want to have a fabric sofa. If you are going for bright and vivid colours then you may want to opt for leather and this is because it reflects light much better. If you want to learn about upholstery fabric then this is very easy for you to do and it is a great way for you to really bring out the most of the room.

Dining Room

Your dining room is most likely connected to your living room so it’s very important that you decorate this with the same ideas or else the house as a whole won’t look like it works. When choosing your dining table, try not to choose one that is going to take up too much room because this will cut down on your space and it won’t make it as welcoming for your guests. Even though you may like an eight-seater set, if you never plan on having eight guests over then you may want to opt for a smaller table as this will really help you to get the right focal point for the room.

Indoor Gardens

If you have a small alcove in your living room then you can easily take advantage of this by having green plants and flowers. A lot of flowers are able to grow indoors now and if you can’t find any that can then you can opt for artificial plants. When you do this, you can add a lot of life to the room and you can also really bring out the colours in the room as well. Think about reds, yellows, pinks and purples.

Open Living Spaces

Modern living spaces are often very open and it is a great way for you to make it look as though there is a lot of space. When you do have an open living space you can then have more seating areas and it is also much easier for you to entertain a lot of guests. If you want to make it look cosier as opposed to modern, try and have big curtains and have tie backs that are oversized with tassels. This will really add comfort to the room and it will also make it feel warmer as well.
