One of the biggest challenges that comes with being a parent is figuring out how to make your kids enjoy eating healthy foods. Many kids don’t want to eat healthily, especially – it seems – when they can see how much you want them to eat it.
These are just a few ways that you can add healthy snacks to your children’s diets without making them hate that food for the rest of their lives.
Make Fruit Shapes
Kids usually already like fruit, but getting them to eat more of it is always a good thing since fruits are so high in good vitamins and minerals. Why not find a way to make fruit more appealing to kids?
Fruits like cantaloupe melon, watermelon and bananas can be cut into fun shapes like stars and hearts using small cookie cutters. These can then be served directly or mixed into a fruit salad that kids will love to look at and eat.
If your kids are old enough to eat foods on a skewer, you can make cute fruit skewers that can be eaten on the go when you want to serve a healthy, tasty snack!
Let Them Choose Their Own Snack
Organise all the snack boxes into one area of the pantry, fridge or cupboard. On each box, list the contents. For example, “1 cookie, 1 apple, 7 grapes, 2 baby carrots” on one box, and “1 chocolate, 1 satsuma, 2 baby carrots, 5 strawberries” on another. Then your children can place their name labels on the snack box they’d most prefer. Whichever box remains is yours!
Even if your children don’t always pick the healthiest option for themselves, you’ll be making sure that they are never overeating on unhealthy options!
Make Some Dips!
Some parents firmly believe that their kids don’t and never will like vegetables, but they might not have tried this unique approach yet. If you find that your kids do not want to snack on treats like carrots, cucumber or celery, letting them dip it in something might help.
A few dips you might want to try are:
- Hummus. You can find so many different recipe variations and it’s so easy to make yourself. This rosemary and garlic one looks really tasty. You can also make red pepper hummus to make it taste sweeter. You can also make it pink by adding beetroot.
- Salsa
- Guacamole
Choose Healthy Snacks For Yourself
Many kids want to be just like their parents. If you pick out healthy snacks when you are snacking around the house, the chances are high that your kids will see this and want to try what you are eating, too.
Like parent, like child, right? If you are snacking on junk foods, you children will not understand why they have to eat healthily and you do not, so make healthy foods the most desired food type at home by eating them, too!
