Vienna is a beautiful city that is far more family-friendly than you might think. At first glance, it appears to be a very sophisticated place that caters mostly for adult tourists. It is full of old buildings, museums, art galleries, bars, clubs, restaurants and high-end shopping areas. But, the Austrians also do a wonderful job of making sure that there is plenty for kids to enjoy. Here are just a few ideas to help you to plan a trip to Vienna with your children.

Music for little people
Music is at the centre of the city’s identity. So, its residents are very keen to introduce children to the performing arts at an early age. The major venues in the city have clubbed together and come up with the ‘music for little people’ initiative. You can find out more about the many opera and ballet performances from this website. The list always includes performances that are suitable for children to attend. It only takes a little extra research to work out which ones your kids will enjoy the most.

When planning which performances to attend take into account their length. Young children are likely to get bored before the performance has ended. For them choose one of the shorter performances like Max and Moritz or take them to one of the city’s music workshops instead.

Travel back in time
The magic Vienna History Tour is a fun way for you and your children to learn more about the city’s past. If you do this tour during your first day or two in Vienna you are likely to find that your children will be more engaged when you take them to see the city’s various historic sites.

Visit the ZOOM Children’s Museum
If your kid’s think museums are boring, try taking them to ZOOM. This hand’s on museum will open their eyes to just how much fun they can have while learning. The museum is divided up into four different areas, each designed for a different age group. So, if there is a big age gap between your children you may need to split up to make sure that each of them gets the most out of their visit.

See the zoo at night
When you travel with kids filling in the time between the tourist places close and bedtime can be challenging. Fortunately, this is a problem you can easily solve in Vienna. There are plenty of evening (night) tours for everyone to enjoy One of the best ones for kids is the Schönbrunn Zoo night tour. Everyone on the tour has to wear infrared binoculars, so children have to be aged 10 or more to join this guided tour.

As you can see there is no shortage of activities that are suitable for children of all ages. All you need to do now is to do a little more research and plan your trip. The city’s official tourist website will help you to find out more about what is available. Provided you get it right your kids are sure to want to return to the city when they have their own children.
