Although we are homeschooling and the school holidays aren’t all that different to term-times, the groups and activities that we usually attend do stop so we still have that long stretch of trying to find activities to keep the kids entertained. Given that everywhere is really busy in the holidays and that we have the benefit of going in term-times we usually try and avoid anywhere too popular making it even trickier.
It can be easy to fall into bad habits for an easy life when you are trying to keep kids entertained for long periods of time, I know that there are some days when I say yes to too many sweet snacks and let them watch telly for too long but as summer is the nicest time of year to be outdoors I am trying to make lots of plans for a healthy summer where we are all happy, although it hasn’t actually stopped raining for days!!
Some of the things we have planned are spontaneous camping trips where we just go off for the night when the weather forecast is good. We are also going to go on lots of bike rides as it’s something we all enjoy. We want to try and save money on food too by taking picnics instead of buying food on days out. We’ve also been making our own ice-lollies instead of buying them, this saves money and means we can add healthier ingredients and less sugar.
Push Doctor have written a blog post about keeping your kids healthy this summer in five easy steps. They have some great tips on there surrounding topics like diet, staying active, sun safety, keeping brains busy and sleeping well. There are some links to easy, family friendly recipes too. Not all of them are vegan but they could all be made vegan by substituting the dairy options for dairy free ones.
They are also running a competition with some great prizes available. You can find details of the competition here.
