We started reading books to the kids when they were really young as part of their bedtime routine. I definitely think it’s a crucial part of helping them their our language. This infographic by Bright Horizons explains why it’s so important.
The book suggestions are great too, Dear Zoo and all of the That’s Not My books were absolute favourites in our house when Cherry and Tiger were toddlers and they still love Room on the Broom and The Tiger Who Came To Tea. No Matter What is a lovely book too, I used to read it to Cherry every night when she was little.
As we are homeschooling the kids are learning to read in their own time and it’s amazing to see how they learn new words every day. It’s also interesting to notice the difference between Cherry and Tiger. They are two and a half years apart but Tiger is already showing a real interest in learning to read, something which Cherry didn’t show at all at his age. In fact it’s only recently that she has been wanting to learn.
